RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18th, 1970 in Newark, New Jersey. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her political activism, acting abilities and a talent for rhyme. When she was just 8 years old, old an Muslim friend gave her the name Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the Shiloh Baptist Choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mom was a major influencer; she was in touch with the children and music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, was asked to sing at a dance school.
